This is a new specialized class that will introduce students to the Sephardic typeface that was used by Sephardim for a variety of printed documents (e.g. religious texts, didactic materials, periodicals, etc). Throughout our six weeks, students will be introduced to reading in Rashi characters, from alef to tav. Meruba characters will also be reviewed, since they often appear on the very pages containing Rashi characters. This course will focus on developing reading proficiency, although students will also be asked to write and transcribe. Some knowledge of Ladino or another Romance language is preferred. This class does not require any proficiency in reading or writing Hebrew. For those interested in developing proficiency in speaking Ladino, you might also consider enrolling in a (beginner, intermediate, conversation, or advanced) language class.
